OVERSUPPLY SOS
- Baby coughing and spluttering at the breast?
- Green explosive poo nappies? Reflux symptoms?
- Your milk squirting and leaking a LOT?
- You’ve tried all the usual techniques for engorgement?
What can you do BEFORE FEEDS?
1. BREAST MILKSHAKE!
SHAKE YOUR BREAST BEFORE FEEDS TO COMBINE WATERY AND FATTY MILK, TO CREATE A MORE EVEN CONSISTENCY.
This will help regulate flow and lactose intake in baby.
2. MASSAGE and REVERSE PRESSURE SOFTENING
SOFTEN UP BREAST, POSSIBLY INDUCE A LET-DOWN TO RELEASE EXTRA FAST FLOWING MILK.
softer breast is easier for baby to latch onto (rather than a ‘balloon’ or ‘fountain’)
3. HAND EXPRESS A LITTLE
SOFTEN THE BREAST
Baby won’t need to ‘fight the flow’, achieve a deeper latch this way
What can you do DURING FEEDS?
1. UPRIGHT FEEDING POSITIONS
-koala hold -laid back nursing
Baby’s head higher than their bottom
2. KEEP BABY ON THE SAME SIDE FOR THE DURATION OF A FEED
this will help avoid a lactose overload by getting ONLY high water, high sugar milk, and help get to the thicker fattier milk
if problem persists, talk to a breastfeeding supporter about block feeding
3. BREAST COMPRESSIONS TO KEEP BABY ON THE SAME SIDE FOR LONGER
to support baby with flow, to help remove fattier milk from deeper inside milk ducts
What can you do AFTER FEEDS/ BETWEEN FEEDS?
1. KEEP BABY UPRIGHT FOR LONGER
-for at least 15 minutes -google ‘wonky winding’
this will help baby digest some milk before being put down flat
2. MORE REGULAR, SHORTER FEEDS
LESS PRESSURE ON LITTLE TUMMIES, MORE TIME TO DIGEST
